How to actually ‘write how you speak’
If you struggle to make your copy sound like you, one piece of advice that's often floated around is to just "write how you speak."
But what does that actually mean?
Well, a quick way is to literally record yourself speaking (pretend you're leaving a voice note to a pal).
Then listen back, and pick out the phrases and sentences that would work in the copy you're trying to write.
It'll feel really cringe.
My only advice (for this and also maybe for life?) is to embrace the cringe and keep going.
How can you use it right now?
Decide what you're going to write about
Get out your phone and open the recorder app
Picture the person you want to read this (ie. your ideal client)
Press 'record' and start chatting away about the topic
Listen back, or run the recording through a transcription app*
Pull out some choice phrases to construct your copy
Et Voilà! Your copy (hopefully) sounds a bit more you.
*I've used HappyScribe and Otter.ai, both have free versions. You will almost undoubtedly need to tidy up some of the transcription, but it should give you a rough idea of what you said.
