Using subheads in your copy

Example One:

When you have a chunk of information to get across, the temptation is to write it all out like this, in one long paragraph. While big blocks of copy might be able to contain more detailed information in the same space, your readers are much less likely to read all the way through. What was that statistic about attention spans only being a few seconds long? I don't know what to tell you pal, if you've read this far you deserve a prize or something.

Example Two:

With subheads

This copy is much easier-on-the-eye.

And more subheads

Subheads throughout your copy draw attention down the page — and keep people reading for longer.

And another subhead

Sure, there's 30 fewer words, but does this example actually say less than the other one?

Even if it does say less, you probably read more.

Be honest: Which one was your eye drawn to first?

How can you implement it right now?

Scoot on over to your Home or About page and take a look at the first couple of sentences or paragraphs (bonus points if you look on mobile).

Is there anything visually breaking up the copy? If you're looking at a wall of text, go in and find convenient points to break it up a bit.

Add headings and subheads—where they make sense.

Sometimes just adding paragraph breaks can be enough to chop up a long chunk of copy and add enough visual interest to keep the reader scrolling down the page.
